Built as a First Class only ferry by the Southern Railway to link the Golden Arrow and La Flèche d'Or trains on the London - Paris service.

 

Became HMS Canterbury, troopship, from 1940-45, damaged at Dunkirk, used as a Troop Landing ship on D-Day. Back to cross-channel service under SR/BTC and British Railways for a further 20 years until scrapped.

Locomotive No 740 is a South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SE&CR) 4-4-0

 

Ship is either the SE&CR 'Dover', 'Calais' or 'Lord Warden', built for the LC&DR in 1896. Probably a Belgian Railways paddle steamer behind.

The newly delivered passenger ro-ro car ferry (RoPax) 'Prince Laurent', very early in her career, arriving at Ostend.

 

The second of 2 sister ships for RMT, the first being 'Prins Philippe'.

 

Sold to Greek owners in 1992 and belived to be still in service.

Seen somewhere in the Dover Strait. The first Belgian Marine ship to appear with the RMT logo on the funnel.

 

An advance on previous Belgian ferries in capability if not looks. However she seems very traditional now.

 

At this stage she was only a year old, the first of 2 sisters, the second being 'Prince Laurent'.

 

Sold to Italy in 1986, becoming 'Moby Love', later to Greece for Greek island services.

 

The (Kodak) Instamatic slides appear to have faded but I seem to recall they were originally like this, but had become a bit grubby over the years.

The ship was withdrawn from Sealink service in 1981.

SeaFrance freight/train ferry approaching Calais. Train ferry operations ceased due to the tunnel but she continued as a freight ferry.

 

Currently operating between Spain and Morocco as 'Al Andalus Express'

I have no idea whatever became of Aeromarine, but the photos were excellent.

 

'Compiegne' was an early SNCF car ferry on the Dover - Calais route, seen here in early livery prior to Sealink branding in the early 1970's.

 

Sold away from the Channel in 1981.

'Prinses Paola' was known as the 'Racing Greyhound' - the last conventional passenger ferry built for the Ostend - Dover service. She became a cruise ship in 1988

'Reine Astrid' was a classic Belgian Marine Administration passenger ferry, one of three sisters built in the late 1950s. Converted into a Passenger Terminal in 1983 for Dover and later Ramsgate.

I suspect this postcard was taken from the breakwater at Folkestone.

 

One of the huge number of Photo Precision postcards of the 1960s to 1980s. It might be argued that quantity, rather than quality, ruled, but they certainly produced a lot, with some interesting views.

Silver City were one of a handful of airlines that offered to transport your car (with of course its occupants) across the English Channel.

 

However, the planes could only handle about six cars, so such a service could not be sustained as car ownership grew and grew.
